KU's Homecoming 2014

Guess what Jayhawks? Homecoming is back in KU! For those who are unfamiliar with what exactly is this homecoming, well it's simply an annual event held by a university to welcome visiting alumni's. This year's homecoming was held from  September 21st until September 27th. The KU Alumni Association held countless exciting activities throughout the whole week and this year's theme was Roll with the Hawks.

To name some of those activties is the Glow KU tradition. Students from on-campus and off-campus showed off their school spirits by decorating their buildings with red, blue, yellow and white lights (Christmas is coming early I guess). This year, Sigma Kappa sorority won first place! And behold, their Glow KU house!

To kick things off that very Monday, the Homecoming Sign Competition was held in front of Watson Library's Lawn. Students of KU got to show their creativity by decorating a plywood signs. Since the Homecoming's theme was Roll with The Hawks, there were a lot of board games that students used to inspire their design.

Another fun event was the Chalk 'n' Rock competition. Students passing by Wescoe Beach last Tuesday would know what happened there! You could see a lot of students working hard and absolutely having fun decorating the sidewalks in front of Wescoe Hall using only chalk!

But the most anticipated event for this whole week where everyone has been long waiting for was the HOMECOMING PARADE! This I when all of KU students and the Lawrence community get together at Massachusetts Street in Downtown Lawrence to get their school spirits on and support KU's football team for the upcoming Homecoming football game.

So of course, the Malaysian Student Association took part in this parade to represent our beloved country! Even though not many of the Malaysian students could make it, those who still came made the best out of it and had a blast!

We took the bus from Kansas Union all the way to Downtown. All the international students of KU had gathered at South Park on Massachusetts Street.

Steven Sweat, one of the program coordinators from the International Student Services, was in charge for the day and helped distributing all the country's flag.

While waiting for all everyone to gather around, we took the opportunity to meet new international friends and took pictures with them!

Finally, the official photograph session took place. Knowing that there were more over than 100 countries, it was a bit difficult trying to fit everyone into the picture (let alone seeing our faces haha) but we managed to pull through and got perfect shots!

Of course we had to have our own little Malaysian group photography session. All thanks to the club's official photographer, Zee! By the looks on our faces and how huge our smiles were, you could tell that we were super excited for the parade to start! Two of the club's member, Aaron and Brandon, had proudly worn their old PLKN uniform from years ago. As for the ladies, Tabitha Yu Wei Zee and Puteri, had worn our traditional clothing of baju kurung and cheongsam. We were absolutely in high Malaysian spirits that day!

And when I said high spirits, I really did mean it! We took the time to reenact the monumental statue of Malaysia's Tugu Negara. Here is a picture edited by the Club's Vice President, Jason Eng. You could say that we came really close to it right?

After countless and hundreds of photos taken, the parade had officially started and you could hear the music playing from the marching band, the cheers from the crowd and the chants from all the students of KU. Downtown Lawrence was the place to be on Friday! You could see all the theme-based floats, all the vehicles and banners making its way along Massachusetts Street. Most of all, I am pretty sure everyone saw us happily waving our Malaysian Flag and even singing the national anthem Negaraku!

The parade soon came to an end but we were still in high spirits, so we continued on taking more photos and re-enacting the Tugu Negara once more since more Malaysian students joined us.

We absolutely had a wonderful time throughout the whole Homecoming Week in KU! Hopefully next year's homecoming would have more exciting events and there would be more Malaysian students joining us in this annual tradition. Rockchalk Malaysia!

MASA Meeting

The Malaysian Student Association had their first general meeting this afternoon! Our President, Tabitha, had gathered all the committee members at Eaton Hall's Library to discuss some of the upcoming events to be held. Here are some of the events planned out :-
  • DeepaRaya. Since Eid adil-Adha (4th October) and Diwali (23rd October) will be celebrated within the same month, we decided to merge these two celebrations together into one, hence DeepaRaya! We will be gathering all the Malaysian students for a pot-luck evening day together at Meadowbrook Apartments. There will hopefully be Nasi Lemak, Ayam Kari, and Mee Sup!

  • Thanksgiving Gathering. Thanksgiving Day is one of the most festive celebrations here in the USA and it is considered as a day of giving thanks in return for all of the blessings received from the past year. So in holiday traditions, we will be having a gathering and a pot luck for this day! Definitely will be having some turkey *gobble gobble*!

  • Snowball Fight. Since Kansas has been known to have severe snow days once in a while in Winter, we would for sure be having snow days (classes are cancelled). So we decided to take up this opportunity to spend time on campus and have lots of winter fun together!

Here are some pictures from the meeting! From the left, presenting to you Shao, Zee, Puteri, Yu Wei, Tabitha and Jason. We'll try our best to make sure that these events do take place and through this, we get to strengthen the bond between club members. Dates for all these events are yet to be announced, be sure to check with the Malaysian Student Group in KU on Facebook from time to time. Rockchalk Malaysia!

The newly MSA members continued on taking photos outside of Eaton Hall after the meeting finished! ;-)

Gobble Gobble Deepagiving (Chapter 2)

Hi there, this year we Malaysian decided to have another Deepagiving gathering.
This year we made it even bigger than usual, instead of celebrating it ourselves we invited our American friends to have first hand experience on Malaysian food associate with Deepavalli.
This time, it involves more food, drinks and more laughter than usual.
We even laughed too loud while playing that we accidentally had a security officer knocking on the door giving us a warning. Ooops. Thankfully our host, Natalie and Tabitha Teo had it cover. Thank you!!

-From this combo picture, we can see Malaysian digging in whenever there are foods in front of them.

-2nd pictures is the food we cooked- Curry Chicken and Ayam Rendang was the attraction
(Since we have some Americans friend, we thought it might be wise to order Pizza, just in case. Little did we know it was us who have to eat the leftover Pizza as our American friends enjoyed our food!!!)

-3rd picture shows just how much guests were there that night. We even have to sit on the floor or stand by the kitchen!! haha

After dinner, we played a game call "Guess Who am I". It is just basically you have a person write a name and stick it on your forehead. You then have to guess the name that was written. There are 4 Justin Biebers, Taylor Swift, old legends like Elvis and Sinatra. We even got some hot actor and actresses like Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lopez, Emma Watson and Jennifer Lawrence among the picks. There was even a place for the sensational leader of the amazing girl group from South Korea : Taeyeon from Girls Generation!!!
(Kpop lovers must be wanting to join this game. Hehe)

Unfortunately this time, there isn't much picture taken except this one as everyone was busily chatting with each other. American friends wanting to know what we do and how we celebrate festivals in Malaysian and everyone was having fun guessing who are they during the game.

Stay tuned for another gathering- this time the actual Thanksgiving gathering with only us Malaysian and two Peruvians.

Malaysia Day celebration

Hi everyone, I'm the new blogger Marcus
As a Malaysian, we are patriotic people. Therefore, on September 14 (two days early), the KU Malaysian Association decided to have our own Malaysia Day celebration here in Lawrence, Kansas.
Chris, our new President decides his man cave would be the best location for this event. Yay, thanks to him.
As a typical Malaysian, we have a lot (and I mean a lot) of food.

There's our host here holding a blow torch - Chris Cheok

A great chef as well we could see here - Chris

Co-host Marveen helping out in preparing the food

It's not a Malaysia day celebration without curry chicken!!!
(I think the pot of curry was finished in about 30 minutes)

Malaysian Girls group having fun eating and eating...

playing kinect games

We even invited non-Malaysian friends to the party

And here you can see Malaysian taking some more food.

At the end of the day, we had a lot of fun
Special thanks to the few chefs who make such delicious foods.
We enjoy gatherings and celebrating special day. Hopefully, we would be able to have more gatherings and create more wonderful memories together.
It may just be us here at the University of Kansas but as Malaysians we enjoy the company of each other and we do these events to remind us that we are Malaysian.

=)

Gobble Gobble, Deepagiving.

Hey there, Chris here. Ever wondered what would happen
if you were to combine two major festivities together?
One from the East and one from the West?
Well, we did exactly just that. What resulted was not a balance
between the two celebrations but a typical Malaysian gathering.
It involved a lot of food, drink, laughter and a new must play when
Malaysians have a gathering in the University of Kansas, Mahjong.

I was not kidding when I said Mahjong, didn't I?
We went through a good number of rounds of Mahjong, on average fifteen games.
Minimum.

Pn. Sara, a representative from the EMC (Education Malaysia Chicago) decided to
visit our base of operations. She is a very nice and friendly lady. She offered
to cook nasi lemak if we visit her in Chicago.

And here you can see Pn. Sara lecturing me about how bad my
tandoori tasted. (just kidding, she was asking me about my home in Malaysia).

Food was great as usual. I mean, it's Malaysian food. Who doesn't love
Malaysian food?
And here is everyone in one photo. Almost everyone anyways.

Watch out for more updates when we have other big events on this blog, stay tuned!!!!

Malaysians meet Bloomington Park

In remembrance of our home country's independence,
we did what we Malaysians were good at to remember
it, cooking, eating and being very good social creatures.

We had a barbecue at Bloomington park which is a
part of Clinton Lake. It was a good day so we even
invited some of our Singaporean comrades. Beautiful
people, definitely.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that we had the
badminton sports group join us for the barbecue
as well. Very good people and very good players,
so come on down to the University of Kansas,
and we'll definitely let you in on a game or two
if you're here on a Friday or a weekend.

Here are some of the highlights of the event on
Saturday.

That's all of us that were at the barbecue right there.
Now this isn't the whole gang. We have more Malaysians.
Somewhere.

Yep, doing what we Malaysians do best, waiting for food.
The food was excellent. Hats off to those who prepared
the food.

Yes, I kid you not. This is a fruit pizza, made for this
special event. I was looking for this thing but the only
time I got to see it was this photo.

I personally can't believe 55 years have gone by
already since our independence. Makes you feel
old. hah. Although I do wonder, where did the
patriotism go? Just food for thought. I mean
nothing by that. Anyways, moving on.

Another highlight. Our Malaysian brother feeding his dog
a sausage. Lots of love shown here.

After all that we played volleyball. Men vs the Women.
The women were clearly winning. Then again it was
because there were about twelve girls and it was against
seven guys. So yeah.

After that was all said and done, some of us decided to
go to one of our houses to play Mahjong.
Two Chindians, one Chinese and one Indian.
Guess who is who?

After Mahjong...

This resulted. Full day well spent indeed.

This is just the beginning though (hopefully). We probably have more
events coming up but we're just going with the flow. Malaysian style.

More to come soon (that's for sure).  Peace out.
